Nail Surgery

Treatment Name

Fungal Nail

Doctor Name

This is a surgery used to relieve chronic pain or deformity caused by ingrown toenails by permanently removing the offending nail edge or the entire nail.

What will the process consist of?

The podiatrist will inject local anesthetic to the affected toe. Once the toe is numb, they will then apply a tourniquet (tight band) and lift either the nail edge or the entire nail, including the root. Phenol (a caustic substance) is subsequently administered to the uncovered nail bed to inhibit fresh nail growth. There is no need for stitches in this surgery.

The region will be covered with a wide bandage, therefore please wear shoes with an open forefoot on the day of the treatment.

What type of anesthetic will be used, and will I be put to sleep?

This procedure requires injecting local anesthetic into the toe. You will not be put to sleep during the treatment. You are welcome to bring a companion as well as a book/magazine or music to enjoy.

How long will it take, and when can I go home?

The operation typically takes around an hour. You can return home immediately after the treatment, but you will need to be driven because you cannot drive while the toe is still numb. You will need to return back in the coming weeks to see how you are recovering, and most individuals will be completely recovered within 2-3 months.
