Verrucae are innocuous lesions produced by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). They usually heal in 2-5 years, although some people have them for longer.
There are presently over 100 identified forms of HPV, with the most frequent appearing on the hands and feet. The virus is infectious and infects the host when it penetrates the skin; for example, a foot can become infected in damp environments such as swimming pools, changing rooms, and toilets. An infected bare foot will discharge virally infected cells onto the floor; if another foot walks over the same place and takes up the virus, through the newly sensitive wet skin, a new host can now be infected; this process can also occur with towels and footwear. The virus can incubate for several months before becoming evident to the human eye.
Treatment of oneself
The most popular therapy for verrucae is to use over-the-counter caustics, which are effective and often painless, but require constant usage and time.
