This is a technique for relieving discomfort or deformity caused by ingrown toenails by permanently removing the nail edge or the entire nail.
The podiatrist will apply a local anesthetic to the toe. Once the toe is entirely numb, the podiatrist will apply a tourniquet (tight band) and lift either the nail edge or the entire nail, including the root. Phenol (a caustic substance) will subsequently be administered to the newly disclosed nail bed to inhibit fresh nail growth. There will be no need for stitches throughout this surgery.
The region will be covered with a wide bandage, therefore please wear shoes with an open forefoot on the day of the treatment.
This will require injecting local anesthetic into the toe; you will not be put to sleep during the treatment. You are welcome to bring a companion as well as a book/magazine or music to enjoy.
The operation will take around an hour. You can return home immediately after the treatment, but you will need to be driven because you cannot drive while the toe is still anaesthetised. You will need to return back in the coming weeks to see how you are recovering, and most individuals will be completely recovered within 2-3 months.
We are a well-established private podiatry and chiropody practice in Kenya.
